The higher the volume, the stronger the developer, the more the hair cuticle opens and the more lightening of the natural pigment there will be. The selection of developer depends on the application; 6 volume is generally used for tone-on-tone application with no lift, while 20 and 30 volume developers are used for services that require lifting of natural base colour and grey coverage.
